The reserve protects the breeding sites of various tern species and the feeding and resting habitats of waders. Since 2007, it is again the only nesting site in Poland for the common tern - about 570 pairs (2009). There are also nests of little terns, common terns, little ringed plovers, oystercatchers, in the past also colonies of herring gulls and black-headed gulls nested on the sandbars; breeding of Arctic terns and the only breeding of little ringed plover in Poland has also been recorded.
